What’s your voice? Alamo Drafthouse Knows Theirs

By now, everyone has seen or heard the “PSA” and pre-run commercial that Alamo Drafthouse has made about the patron they kicked out for texting during the movie and she thanked them with a profanity-laced rant that she was kind enough to leave on their answering machine.  Whether it’s real or not, it’s entertaining and touched a chord.

The best part about it is that it reflects the overall attitude of the business and the “voice” they use for everything. It’s snarky, a little smug, a little hipster, but it’s them.  That’s why it works. They aren’t a staid brand, that all of a sudden tried to be “edgy.”

Here’s the blog post they used to introduce the spot. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is, oh and if you are one of those people that text in a movie theater?  I don’t like you very much.

  1. I have friends who are regular patrons of this particular Alamo Drafthouse. They are fairly Luddite in their thinking. They use technology, but really don’t “get” much of it. So of course the idea of kicking out a texter is right up their alley.

I love the concept. I love the “this is a place for grownups” idea. And THAT is their bread and butter…. You are expected to BE a grown up at their theater. Those that are regular patrons LOVE the fact that they crack down on talkers and texters. ADH had nothing to lose and everything to gain with this. Real or not.

Many people would support such policies in theaters. ADH banks on it.
