Talk about what you know

Whales spotted near Rio Vista:

“Our expertise doesn’t go into the biological aspect — we will just maintain the safety zone and publish the information,’ she said. ‘I don’t know what actions they would take should the whales become stranded.'”

Great quote above is from Coast Guard Lt. Amy Marrs. This is something that is a staple of media training 101. “talk about what you know,” and “it’s OK not to know the answer to a reporter’s question.”

Kudos to the US Coast Guard on a well-trained spokesperson. It’s much better to tell a reporter that you don’t know the answer, than to speculate and give the wrong answer.
