Resist the temptation

I’m asking my colleagues to please be sensitive to attaching a pitch to the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Please don’t pitch yourself as an ‘expert’ to point out what the administration did wrong. Please don’t pitch your security client as able to talk about what they could have done to prevent this. I read an article this morning with the headline of “Parents Demand Firing of Virginia Tech President: Police Chief.”

Firing isn’t the answer. It seems there’s four answers to a public issue these days, and usually there is a combination of at least two, but sometimes a trifecta comes into play;
investigations;
firing;
apologies;
and rehab.

There are bad people in the world. Bad things happen. It’s terrible, but they do. But, please don’t turn it into a chance to pitch your client.
